LUTHER, Martin - Lot 17
LUTHER, Martin Tischreden oder colloquia. Eisleben, U. Gaubisch, 1566. In-folio (336 x 200 mm) of [12] ff., 625 ff. misquoted 626, [31] pp. (table). Cold-stamped saddle leather over wood, spine with clasps (contemporary binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of Martin Luther's "table talk". A curious posthumous work filled with "autobiographical confidences, insights into theology, lamentations on the corruption of the century, burlesque anecdotes, antics directed at the Pope and the monks [...]. The historical importance of the text is very great [...] From each page emerges, alive, speaking, the personality of the reformer". (Dictionnaire des Oeuvres, Laffont-Bompiani, V, p. 6042). It is decorated with a full-page woodcut of a coat of arms on the back of the title. This work was translated into French in 1844 by Gustave Brunet at Garnier frères. A very nice copy in a contemporary stamped binding. Some rubbing, restored tears and soiling to the binding, title page restored and rebacked. Brunet III, 1243.
