The chess game between the page Fernando and the princess Yolanda Poplar panel, one board, not parqueted, oval shape 19,5 x 42,5 cm Restorations Provenance : Sale Salavin, Paris, Palais Galliera (Mes Etienne Ader, Antoine Ader, Picard et Tajan), 12 December 1973, n°16, reproduced, (Lorenzo Costa). Exhibition: Dance and Entertainment, Paris, Galerie Charpentier, 1948 - 1949. Bibliography: R. van Marle, Iconographie de l'Art Profane, The Hague, 1931, vol. I, reproduced fig. 57. The painting represents a very particular iconography The chess game between the page Fernando and Yolanda, daughter of the nobleman Renato. The subject is taken from a chivalric poem by Huon de Bordeaux, written between the end of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth century. The chess game metaphorically expresses the idea of a love conceived as a fight and at the same time a love with a thousand possibilities, with countless joys and sorrows. In the poem, the page Fernando makes an agreement with the noble Renato: he will play a game of chess with his daughter Yolanda, famous for her skill at the game, and if he wins, he will receive her in marriage, otherwise he will be beheaded. Yolanda, during the game, falls in love with Fernando and decides to let him win, ignoring the pact between the page and her father. The profile of Yolanda is inspired by the famous Portrait of Isabella d'Este painted by Leonardo around 1500 and now in the Louvre Museum. We thank Emilio Negro for his help in describing this painting.
