ALMANACH ROYAL, year 1755. Paris, De l'Imprimerie... - Lot 6 - Giquello
ALMANACH ROYAL, year 1755. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Le Breton, 1755. In-8, olive green morocco, large lace with small irons, large flowered vase with small irons in the center, ornamented spine, interior roulette, yellow silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges (Period binding). Charming lace binding attributed to Bailly, a Parisian bookbinder living in Place Cambray, received master on November 13, 1747. The binding is distinguished by the curious motif it displays in the center of the boards, a large flowerpot, whose design is particularly original. It is to be compared with the binding reproduced in colors by Gruel in the Manuel de l'amateur de reliures (t. I, pl. opposite p. 47), binding signed Bailly and covering an almanac of 1766: the two vases are absolutely identical and one finds the hand of the binder in the way of treating the stem and the branches of the plant by means of nets and the fruits by circles. At the top, a thick laid paper sheet decorated on each side with a frame of stenciled foliage, left blank. Some pages foxed, the first two endpapers were formerly glued (visible traces). Spine and first board faded. Irregular endpapers.
