ROYAL ALMANACH, year 1781. Paris, D'Houry,... - Lot 16 - Giquello
ROYAL ALMANACH, year 1781. Paris, D'Houry, s.d. [1781]. Large volume in-8, red morocco, triple filet gras et maigre, coat of arms in the center, large fleur-de-lis gilt in the corners, smooth spine decorated with a fleurdelisé and compartmentalized decoration, interior roulette, lining and endpapers of blue tabis, gilt edges (Period binding). Copy in large paper, nicely bound in morocco for the countess of Provence whose coat of arms is stamped on the boards. Marie-Joséphine-Louise de Savoie (1753-1810), daughter of Duke Victor-Amédée III, was the wife of the Count of Provence, brother of Louis XVI. Escaping the Revolution, she ended her life in exile and was never queen, because she died five years before the coronation of her husband, king of France from 1815 to 1824 under the name of Louis XVIII. Her library had been composed with great intelligence and included 1665 volumes that were dispersed during the Revolution, the municipalities of Versailles and Fontainebleau sharing the most important ones (Quentin Bauchart, Les Femmes bibliophiles de France, t. II, pp. 309-330). From the library of Polly Brooks Howe, an American philanthropist, with her ex-libris. Vertical crease on the spine, three jaws skillfully restored.
