AUGUSTIN (saint)
Les Confessions, translated into French, by M. Arnauld d'Andilly. Paris, Veuve Jean Camusat et Pierre le Petit, 1651. In-8, red morocco, boards bordered by a roulette and covered with a large decoration with poly-lobed compartments drawn with double fillet and arranged around a central compartment with eight stars, the whole gilded with small dotted irons, decorated with a small scroll with a full line repeated on the edges of the frame and in various places of the decoration, spine decorated, the caissons decorated with twisted motifs and small dotted irons, red morocco lining decorated with a wide straight border delimiting a central rectangle decorated with four compartments with curved shapes spread around a cartouche with straight, curved and curved sides, all gilt with small dotted irons, gilt edges, chased and painted with flower motifs (Period binding). Fourth edition of Arnauld d'Andilly's translation, revised and corrected exactly on twelve old manuscripts, & with Notes at the end. A fine copy. Exceptional late fanfare binding executed by Antoine Ruette, in doubled morocco, very richly ornamented with stippled irons, the edges gilt, chased and painted. The elegant red morocco lining is decorated with a rich decoration different from that of the boards which gives it a particular character. Typical of the productions of this workshop, the binding is comparable to two others - unlined - made for an edition of the Office de la Semaine sainte edited by Antoine Ruette in 1661: one was in the Esmerian library (II, 1972, n°40) and the other in the Wittock collection (II, 2004, n°173) (a very similar fanfare model, where one finds notably the eight-pointed star which serves as a reference for the arrangement of the decoration). Antoine Ruette was appointed ordinary bookbinder to the King around 1644 after the death of his father, Macé Ruette. His workshop operated until 1669. The binding, which has undergone minimal and very skilful restoration, is preserved in a modern half-maroquin folder and slipcase. Small paper restoration at the foot of the title, slight marginal wetness on a few leaves. Missing leaf CCc7 corresponding to pp. 781-782. Reproduction on the first cover
