BENAUT
La Furstemberg, with six variations arranged for Harpsichord or Piano Forte. Dedicated to Madame la vicomtesse de Pons. Paris, Chez l'Auteur, s.d. In-4, red morocco, triple filet gras et maigre, fleuron at the corners, coat of arms in the center, smooth spine decorated, interior roulette, gilt edges (18th century binding). Booklet entirely engraved on copperplate by the author's wife, including a title, a dedication page and 8 pages of notated music offering the score for the Furstemberg and the suite of six variations. Benaut (or Benault) was harpsichord master of the royal abbey of Montmartre in Paris (Eitner, t. I, p. 431). A fine copy of the dedication to the arms of the Duchess of Pons, daughter of the Viscount of Rennes and Lannion, and of Charlotte-Félicité de Clermont-Tonnerre. The coat of arms had been covered during the Revolution with a piece of red morocco stamped with a gilt fleuron (vase in bloom); one of these pieces of morocco - carefully removed - has been preserved as a witness of this period when one wished to remove all marks of nobility: this practice was undoubtedly the most respectful for books, others, "fanatics", had no qualms about scratching the coats of arms right off the skin or even destroying the books.
