BIBLE. - Esdras and Nehemias, translated... - Lot 29 - Giquello
BIBLE. - Esdras and Nehemias, translated into French, with an explanation drawn from the Holy Fathers, & the Ecclesiastical Authors. S.l.n.d. [Paris, Guillaume Desprez, c. 1693]. In-8, red morocco, crowned figure gilt in the center and at the corners of the boards, spine decorated with the same repeated figure, interior roulette, gilt edges (Binding of the period). Part of a bible, without title page, this one including the two canonical books of Esdras in the translation of Isaac Le Maistre de Sacy. Nice woodcut vignette at the head of the first book. A fine copy, with the arms of Paule-Françoise-Marguerite de Gondi de Retz (1655-1716), duchess of Lesdiguières. Daughter of Pierre de Gondi (1602-1676), general of the Galleys of France, and niece of the Cardinal de Retz, Paule de Gondi had married the duke of Lesdiguières and was widowed in 1688. She had in her hotel, rue de la Cerisaie, near the Arsenal, a library of well-chosen books but apparently in small number, because one meets few, nowadays, which belonged to her writes Quentin Bauchart in the Women bibliophiles of France (t. I, pp. 361-368); this last one continues: They are very elegantly bound, almost always in red morocco, and have for all external decoration only the crossed masses of the Gondi, surmounted by the ducal crown, and repeated five times on the spine and each of the plates. Their binding is excellent, of great solidity, and can be attributed to Du Seuil (see also Guigard, Armorial du bibliophile, I, pp. 240-241). An engraved portrait of this bibliophile in his library, executed by Duflos after Pezey, is found in the Histoire généalogique de la maison de Gondi written by Corbinelli and published in Paris in 1705.
