[DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE (Antoine-Joseph)]
Abrégé de la vie des plus fameux peintres, avec leurs portraits gravés en taille-douce, les indications de leurs principaux ouvrages, quelques réflexions sur leurs caractères, et la manière de connoître les desseins des grands maîtres. Paris, De Bure, 1745. 2 volumes in-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, richly decorated spine, inner lace, gilt edges (Binding of the period). Beautiful work in the vein of the Vite de' piu eccelenti pittori, scultori, e architettori by Vasari. Allegorical frontispiece engraved by Fessard after Latouche, 2 vignettes at the head, and 169 (76 + 93) nice engraved portraits of Italian, Spanish, German, Flemish, English and French artists: some of them are very beautiful and expressive, such as those of Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio or Primaticcio. There are also 13 (3 + 10) frames for portraits that have not been found by the author or have never been engraved, and that the publisher urged: If people who are interested in the progress of the arts, would be happy enough to discover the above portraits that are missing in this collection, & would like to communicate them to me... (t. II, Notice of the bookseller). Only two female artists, each with their own portrait, are mentioned in these two volumes: Marie Tintoretto (Marietta Robusti known as the Tintoretta), daughter of the great Venetian painter to whom we owe in particular the grandiose decoration of the Paradise in the Doge's Palace, and Élisabeth Chéron who knew how to handle with dexterity the burin and the etching. A superb copy bearing the arms of Jean-Baptiste Machault d'Arnouville (1701-1794), maître des requêtes (1724), contrôleur général des Finances (1745), garde des Sceaux (1750) and secrétaire d'État à la Marine (1754). Disgraced in 1757, he was arrested during the Terror and died in prison. The portraits are in very nice proofs. Without volume III published in 1752 which is a supplement to the first two volumes. Some rare foxing. Missing the privilege leaf and the corrections leaf at the end of volume I. Skilful fading to the upper headpieces.
