[GOSMOND DE VERNON (Augustin)]
History of the King's campaigns. Dedicated to His Majesty. Paris, Chez l'Auteur, le Sieur Vanheck, 1751. In-4, garnet morocco, triple gilt fillet, gilt coat of arms in the center, ornate spine, interior roulette, gilt edges (period binding). Beautiful fully engraved work, including a title, a title-frontispiece, a dedication, 44 plates of allegorical medallions accompanied by an engraved explanatory text, and a table leaf. A precious copy in morocco with the large arms of the marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764). Madame de Pompadour, born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, favorite of Louis XV, built up a considerable library, rich at her death of about 4000 books; Quentin Bauchart, in Les Femmes bibliophiles de France, cites about 130 of them in order to give an idea of the importance of this collection, the sale of which was announced in 1765 (the present volume is listed in the catalog of its sale under n°2937). Very beautiful provenance that of the favorite of King Louis XV whose "military exploits, magnanimity and wisdom" are here glorified through engraving, a technique that the marquise mastered with a certain talent. The work is reminiscent of a certain series of etchings engraved by Madame de Pompadour from precious stones cut by Guay, fixing the memory of the main events of her royal lover's reign. Volume of great distinction. Significant but faint wetness affecting about ten plates, small stain in the blank of pl. 12. Lower head and adjacent spines restored.
