HEURES À L'USAGE DE LYON. [at the end] :... - Lot 44 - Giquello
HEURES À L'USAGE DE LYON. [at the end] : Ces presentes heures a lusage de Lion furent achevees par Philippe Pigouchet... S.l.n.d. [at the colophon] : Paris, Philippe Pigouchet for Toussaint de Montjay, July 30, 1495. In-8, 92 ff.n.ch., 12 quires signed A-L8 and M4, brown basane, double framed with three cold filets with small fleuron at the corners, small cold coat of arms in the center, spine decorated (Binding circa 1900). GW, n°13184. - Bohatta, I, 153. - Claudin, t. II, pp. 17-25. - Lacombe, n°35. A very fine incunabula edition, printed in gothic type with 26 lines per page, the text framed with borders. Copy on paper, not washed. On the verso of the first leaf, the front of which is entirely occupied by the large mark of Pigouchet, is the almanac for 21 years, from 1488 to 1508. The illustration is remarkable, rich in detail, with the modeling of the costumes and the contrasts marked by fine and tight cuts, which leads one to believe that the engravings were executed on metal, as Claudin pointed out: it is composed of 19 figures, including the anatomical man, and of compartmentalized borders decorated with floral motifs and historiated scenes taken for the most part from the Old and New Testaments. The two figures illustrating the legend of the three dead and the three living, placed opposite each other on leaves G4v° and G5, are particularly noteworthy. Most of these engravings have already been used by Pigouchet in previous Hours (Paris, 1491, and Rouen, 1492). Several reproductions can be found in Claudin's masterful History of Printing in France in the 15th and 16th centuries, vol. II, pp. 20-24. This edition is extremely rare: only 3 copies are listed in public collections according to the GW online census (Paris, Mazarine; Hidelsheim in Germany; Milan), none in the United States. Small paper loss in the bottom of the title which is a bit soiled, with loss of some letters on the verso and damage to the mark. Minor worm work without loss of text at top of last two quires, repaired at last 2 leaves. Minimal staining to the corner of a few leaves. Spine faded, one cut scratched.
