HOURS ACCORDING TO THE USE OF ROME. [f. B7v°]... - Lot 45 - Giquello
HOURS ACCORDING TO THE USE OF ROME. [f. B7v°] : Hore intemetate virginis Marie secundum usum Romanum. Paris, [Étienne Jehannot ?] for Antoine Vérard, s.d. [ca. 1498]. In-8, 112 ff.n.ch., 14 quires signed A-N8 and A8, long-grained olive-brown chagrin, triple gilt fillet, small flower at the corners, spine decorated, gilt edges (English binding of the early 19th century). A very fine incunabula book of hours printed on vellum for Antoine Vérard, ruled and rubricated in red and blue. The edition has no title as such, the first page beginning with an invocation in verse to Jesus. The text, framed, is printed in gothic type with 33 lines, and the almanac is given for 21 years from 1488 to 1508. Vérard's large mark appears on the verso of folio N8, after which the Pseaumes en françoys (a booklet of 8 leaves bearing the signature A) begins. The illustration includes a total of 19 large figures, including the anatomical man, plus a figure about 18 lines high representing the Holy Trinity (f. K2v°): the engraving on the back of the first leaf depicting the Blessed Virgin in heaven, between the Eternal Father and the Son of God, with, below, a figure in prayer which is said to be Vérard's portrait (reproduced by Claudin, vol. II, p. 394), and the engraving on f. B7v° which alone summarizes the creation of the woman, original sin, and Adam and Eve driven out of the Garden of Eden. The borders are separated by banners with rhyming orations in French; they are mainly decorated with portraits of saints, prophets, scenes from the life of the Virgin and the martyrdom of Jesus. This edition seems to be the one described by Lacombe under n°12 and the GW catalog under n°13313, the latter listing only 2 copies in public collections (Paris, BnF: incomplete; London, British Library). Bookplate on one endpaper, repeated at the top of the almanac page: Minnear (?). From the libraries of Édouard Rahir (II, 1931, n°6) and Madame Belin (1934, n°60). The A5 leaf (decorated with the figure of the anatomical man), a little shorter and whose "edge" is painted red, probably comes from another copy. Restoration on the edges of a few leaves (D8, L7, M3 and the second leaf A2), with framing or subjects carefully redone in pen. Leaf E4 slightly creased, small stains on some leaves especially I1, H7 and H8. The blue or red background of some initials is faded, daubing on 5 vignettes. Slight rubbing to the binding.
