HOURS TO THE USE OF ROME. Paris, Gillet Hardouyn for Germain Hardouyn, s.d. [c. 1510]. In-8, 88 ff.n.ch., 11 quires signed A-L8, plum chagrin, wide border decorated with a gilt frieze by means of two small repeated irons, with emblem of the Holy Spirit in the corners, gilt motifs in spandrels, title and date of the work in gilt letters on four lines on the first plate, ornamented spine, inner lace, blue morocco lining decorated with a large panel filled with a seed of crosses arranged in a decoration of diamond-shaped paving stones with gilt dots, gilt motifs in the corners, blue tabis endpapers bordered with a gilt Greek, gilt edges (English binding circa 1900). Edition described by Lacombe under n°203, but with a variant for the colophon. Almanac for 16 years, from 1510 to 1525. Unframed text, with 33 lines per page. A precious copy illuminated in the period on vellum skin, decorated with 44 beautiful miniatures: 18 large ones placed in gold frames, and 26 small ones which are mainly portraits of saints. Each page is decorated with an outer border of blue painted scrolls with gold endings, on a white background, of flowers and strawberries. The text is ruled and rubricated, the small initials and line ends painted in red and blue. Some small initials are painted on a golden background. The frames are visible by transparency on the back of the leaves. It is now presented in a beautiful and rich doubled binding of Anglo-Saxon workmanship. Only the figure of the anatomical man (skeleton) on the reverse of the title is not illuminated. Spine faded.
