HOURS ACCORDING TO THE USE OF ROME. [f. A1]:... - Lot 49 - Giquello
HOURS ACCORDING TO THE USE OF ROME. [f. A1]: Hore beate Marie Virginis secundum usum Roanum totaliter ad longum... Paris, Germain Hardouyn, s.d. [c. 1527]. In-8, 96 ff.n.ch., 12 quires signed A-M by 8, olive green morocco, triple gilt fillet, crowned numeral with initials DWS gilt in the center, smooth spine decorated, inner scroll, parchment lining and endpapers, gilt edges (18th century binding). Edition printed in gothic type, with 29 long lines per page, without border and decorated with 15 small woodcuts in the text; the typographical mark of Germain Hardouyn decorates the upper part of the title page. The verso of the title page begins with these curious verses : Ung juif mutillant iadis lhostie du saint sacrement. By striking blows, more than ten. Fist out blood habondamment. The almanac (f. A2) is given for 12 years, from 1527 to 1538. The edition corresponds to the one described by Lacombe under n°375. A copy on vellum skin, ruled and rubricated in red and blue, preserved in an 18th century morocco binding later stamped with the crowned cipher of William Spencer, Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858). The binding is of high quality and the decoration of the spine is reminiscent of Derome's style. It is worth noting, however, that the gilder made a mistake in titling the spine, having noted that it was a manuscript (Mss on vellum). From the libraries of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth, and A.-L. McLaughlin, with their bookplates. Repaired loss on the edge of the title leaf and mending in the margin of the following leaf. Spine faded.
