Jules BARBEY D'AUREVILLY (1808-1889)
L.A.S., [July 1858, to Léon ESCUDIER, director of Le Réveil]; 2 pages in-8, in red ink. Beautiful letter about an article on Voltaire and on Taine ["Le Voltairianisme contemporain", "Le Figaro et M. Taine", "Racine et M. Taine" in Le Réveil of July 31, 1858]. "First of all, no Soumet! But me on Voltaire! You will see a beautiful thing! Here is the beginning! Is it original enough?... I will not be long - two more pages that you will have at five o'clock - But it is mine, this Voltaire! And not to this Grévédon de Soumet, he will come another time! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me me! adsum qui faci et Non me convertite famum by not taking my Voltaire, that I will take away from you, you will see! I had put at first at the top of the paper Lettres franches, but this has such articulations of hock and jumps of rump that it cannot, that I believe, remain in the row. We must put to these two things a collective title: For example M. Taine at the Figaro & at the Journal des Débats! Come on - it's good. Don't be afraid to name the Figaro. By God, no! We call ourselves Franks, & not Gauls. They don't name us; well, to make them see the difference between them & us, we name them! TAINE is sunk, - with a backhand! Yes, that can (the two new ones) make an article, as you like them - newspaper style; but God's head full of relics! I want to have Voltaire too!"....
