Marceline DESBORDES-VALMORE (1786-1859)
L.A.S., May 17, 1851, to Mrs. Bascans; 3 pages in-8. "I am in contemplation before my property [...] And what charms me is that it is more solid a thousand times than all the cups whose burning future it contains. She thanks Mr. Bascans "for having thrown such a charming surprise in the middle of my brambles and thorn bushes. It is lovely and warm as sunshine." She could not, however, attend the christening of "your youngest image - I consulted myself for a moment... A flood of tears answered me - The time of courage has not yet come for me. One must keep away from such spectacles - But dear and happy Mother! Such tears are not lost for the happiness of others. May God give you two, who have seen and comforted me, unmixed joys. Let's go back to the burner as to the most unexpected and the most laughing incident of this stormy time"...
