Paul DUKAS (1865-1935)
5 L.A.S., 1923-1331, [to Henry PRUNIÈRES]; 6 pages in-8. Interesting correspondence to the director of La Revue Musicale. Royan 19 October 1923, about the musical supplement of an issue of La Revue Musicale devoted to Ronsard et la Musique (1 May 1924) : "Ronsard? Hum.... I see that only a capella and in the style of Claude Le Jeune or Claude de Sermizy, or in that of the other Claude [Debussy], still... but he alone would have succeeded in not making the agreement of the sixteenth and twentieth century seem postiche - nor pastiche"... [Dukas will give, for this Tombeau de Ronsard, a melody : Sonnet for song and piano]. April 10, 1924. He sends the requested proof, and wonders about the concert (May 15, 1924): "But Dufranne? The voice is powerful, quite theatrical for this piece... The sarabande will be crushed...I would propose Mrs Croiza or a less powerful singer: Devriès perhaps or Pouget"... He read the Monteverdi of Prunières "with much pleasure and profit"... April 19, 1929. About the coming to Paris of FURTWÄNGLER. "It would be a great pleasure for me to meet Mr Furtwängler again". They already met last year "at a lunch offered by the Beaux-Arts, for his first reception in Paris". But he is on an inspection tour and cannot commit himself... December 25, 1931. He sends him the few requested sheets (for the January 1932 issue devoted to Vincent d'Indy): "I wish them to be composed without title, as a continuation of the article you would take up (don't forget the epigraph!) and only separated from its text by the customary mourning line. No repetition of the signature. Simply my initials"... Friday. He thanks him for his "friendly thought. And I understand the Girl so well! But it is impossible "because I am on a diet and for a year I have not dined! Then I have to prepare a little for my Monday morning course at the Ecole Normale"...
