Daim, Chine, Période des Royaumes combattants, Royaume de Chu, 4-3e siècle av. J.-C.
Deer, China, Warring States period, Chu Kingdom, 4th-3rd century B.C. H. 53 cm - L. 39 cm. Polychrome lacquered wood, natural antlers Composed of two carved wooden elements, the body and the head, the antlers being natural, the deer is lying down with its legs close to its body. Treated in a very natural way, the deer also has a lacquered decoration of geometric patterns on a black background that imitates its coat. A major element of the funerary system during the Warring Kingdoms, only one deer was made per tomb, and it was generally placed near the head of the deceased. An auspicious symbol, it played the role of guardian and protector of the tomb. Provenance: 2006-2022. Collection Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert, Paris Acquired from the Jacques Barrère Gallery, Paris Reference: The Golden age of Chinese archeology, Celebrated discoveries from the People's Republic of China. 2000. fig. 109.
