Crane, Eastern Han Dynasty China (206 BC - 220 AD), Gansu, Wuwei District H. 58.5 cm. Wood (spruce), traces of polychromy. The bird is ready to take flight, wings spread, perched on top of a mast, itself set in a conical base. The whole is composed of several assembled wooden elements and decorated with motifs painted in red and black. In the Chu Ci, an anthology of poetry from the Kingdom of Chu, the crane is an auspicious animal and protects the spirit of the dead during their celestial journey.
