Unicorn, Eastern Han Dynasty China (206 BC... - Lot 8 - Giquello
Unicorn, Eastern Han Dynasty China (206 BC - 220 AD), Gansu, Wuwei District H. 41 cm - L. 41 cm. Wood (spruce), traces of polychromy. The different elements of the body were carved separately and assembled. A painted decoration was also brought in black, red and white and indicates the coat of the unicorn. This fabulous animal had the role of guarding and protecting the tomb of the deceased. The posture of the body, horn lowered and tail raised, gives dynamism and ferocity to the animal about to charge. Provenance: 2001-2022. Collection Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert, Paris Acquired from the Jacques Barrère Gallery, Paris Publication: Lise Gotfredsen, The Unicorn, The Harvill Press London, 1999. Illustration on the back cover. Publication: Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert, L'art au futur antérieur, un autre regard, Musée de Grenoble, Actes Sud, 2004.
