Unicorn, China, Gansu, Wuwei site, Han dynasty... - Lot 12 - Giquello
Unicorn, China, Gansu, Wuwei site, Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) H. 14 cm - L. 36 cm. Wood (spruce), traces of polychromy. Carved from a single piece of wood, the unicorn is extremely stylized. The animal is decorated with black and red patterns on a white background representing the coat. The compact body and the powerful neck give an impression of contained strength. The wide-open mouth further emphasizes the warlike character of the unicorn, which here fully fulfills its role as guardian and protector of the deceased and his grave. Provenance : 2001-2022. Collection Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert, Paris Acquired from the Jacques Barrère gallery, Paris Publication: Galerie Jacques Barrère, Bois d'immortalité, 1998. P84 and 85
