Dogu, Japan, Yayoi period (2nd century BC... - Lot 15 - Giquello
Dogu, Japan, Yayoi period (2nd century BC - 3rd century AD) H. 13,5 cm. Terracotta The flat and triangular head, directed towards the sky, eyes and a round mouth. This rare sculpture from the Yayoi period has a particular hairstyle known as a crown (yuigamigata) which allows it to be dated to the beginning of the period. The geometric shoulders are terminated by atrophied arms. A Dogu probably from the same period, preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, shows similarities such as the protruding decoration on the clavicles and the presence of the navel. A number of Dogu similar in style have been excavated in Kamegaoka, Aomori Prefecture. Most of these figures were found without their legs, probably deliberately broken during fertility rites.
