Flying tennin, Japan, c. 18th century H. 38 cm - L. 48 cm. Lacquered and gilded wood, copper The apsara in full flight is playing a double-headed tsuzumi drum. She is richly dressed in pleated and undulating clothes. She wears a very elaborate tiara made of openwork and gilded copper, decorated with ribbons and pendants. The Tennins are divine beings who accompany the stay of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas by dancing and playing music. Provenance: Years 2000- 2022.
