Ancestor representation, central pillar of dwelling, Taiwan, - Lot 42
Ancestor representation, central pillar of dwelling, Taiwan, Paiwan H. 230 cm - L. 45 cm. Wood The ancestor is standing with his legs slightly spread and bent. His arms are bent, his fists closed at the neck. He wears a tiara whose main circular element is in the shape of a wheel or flower. The head is encircled by the undulating bodies of two Vulung (viper of the hundred steps) whose triangular heads diverge above the diadem of the figure. The face is impassive with large open eyes under well-defined arches in relief, the nose is wide and the lips are half-open. The pillar represents the ancestor of the community leader, legitimizing his power and ensuring the protection of the community. Passed down from father to son, the pillar guarantees the transmission of culture and constitutes a link between generations. The viper of a hundred steps called Vulung is the totemic ancestor of the Paiwan. Hélène Kamer locates the origin of this pillar in the village of Laï. We thank Nicolas Grévot for the generosity of his information, which allowed us to clarify our remarks. Provenance: 1988-2022.
