Limoges, middle of the 13th century Diameter: 23.5 cm (some enamel missing) Provenance: Former Charles Boucaud collection, Paris As their name indicates, these small basins called gémellions came in pairs, one like this one with a small gargoyle was used to pour water into the other. Used for liturgical or secular purposes, Limousin gémellions are decorated with various subjects of a courtly or religious nature, but also with armorial bearings, fights or hunting scenes. This production was the subject of a study and a census by J.J. Marquet de Vasselot which was published after his death from the elements that the art historian had left. He describes nearly one hundred and thirty of them, classifying them by their decoration. His first chapter is devoted to the gémellions with religious subjects of which he describes about fifteen. After underlining their rarity, he indicates that these gémellions seem to have been made in Limoges during a rather brief period and that they must be placed at the beginning of the production.
