Three plates probably from the same box painted... - Lot 48 - Giquello
Three plates probably from the same box painted enamel polychrome with gold highlights representing Mercury, Juno and Jupiter in medallions bordered with white. Invisible counter enamels. Each god of Olympus is depicted naked, lying on a grassy mound, surrounded by a black sky with blue clouds, each accompanied by their attributes, the petascus and caduceus for Mercury, the scepter and peacock for Juno and the thunderbolt and eagle for Jupiter. Limoges, workshop of Jean I Limosin, circa 1610/1620 Heights: 8,5 cm and 8,7 cm - Length: 13,5 cm Mercury and Juno in carved and gilded wood frames, Jupiter in a blackened wood frame. (some missing, accidents and restorations) Provenance: Fontainebleau sale, Me Osenat, December 18, 1994, lot 62. Other series of these plates were made in the same workshop, probably that of Jean I Limousin. Thus, we know, among others, a Mercury of similar composition (Sale Paris, Me Fraysse, exp. Roudillon, May 5, 2010, lot 62), yet another Mercury (Sale Paris, Etude Tajan, October 10, 2018, lot 108), four plates in the collections of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Brunswick (inv. 93), four plates also in the Musée de la Renaissance in Ecouen (inv. E. CL. 928 a, b, c, d).
