Caprice of glassmaker, vetro da capriccio,... - Lot 60 - Giquello
Caprice of glassmaker, vetro da capriccio, in transparent watermarked glass with addition of blue glass in the shape of protome of pig. Cylindrical body in vetro a retorti alternating with white fillets, head with snout, ears and eyes, the upper part forming a neck, ending of the front legs with a flap. Venice, end of the 16th century Height: 12 cm - Width: 7,4 cm - Length: 8,9 cm (small accidents and missing pieces) This curious glass is part of the vetri da capiccio that master glassmakers of Murano, but some also active in Florence at the court of the Medici, have made from the second half of the sixteenth century. These curious objects, flasks or oil lamps, took the form of domestic animals (dogs, cats, rabbits) or others such as fish, birds and dolphins, but also imaginary and fantastic, characterized by dorsal ridges and aggressive attitudes. The purpose of these objects was purely decorative, reflecting the technical virtuosity and creative imagination of these artists. These works can be found in the Bichierografia, a catalog of 1600 fogie di bicchieri (glass forms) compiled in 1604 by the Roman designer Giovanni Maggi (1566-1618), a document he dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. Work consulted: A. Bova under the direction of, L'Avventura del vetro dal Rinascimento al Novecento tra Venezia e mondi lontani, Milan, 2010, p 177 to 183.
