Plate in iron embossed in high relief, gold damascened and inlaid with silver with gold highlights representing Mary Magdalene of Austria (1589-1631) in left profile bust. The wife of Cosimo II de' Medici and grand duchess of Tuscany wears a thick piped burr around her neck; her hair is up with a snail's pace braid held in place by jewels; her necklace is adorned with pearls, earrings and pendant. Paris, workshop of Guillaume Dupré (Sissone, circa 1576 - Paris, 1643), first quarter of the 17th century Height: 18 cm - Width: 13,9 cm Framed (small hole of fixing and wears in the corners) Provenance: Former private collection, Switzerland This portrait of the Grand Duchess of Tuscany was made after a model by Guillaume Dupré, known by the medal signed and dated 1613, of which a copy from the former Kress collection is kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington (inv.1957.14.1157, fig.). It seems to be the only known portrait of this woman of great piety made in the technique of embossed and damascened iron, specific to the armory and goldsmith's trade.
