Angel harquebusier of Calamarca, Laiel Dei,... - Lot 84 - Giquello
Angel harquebusier of Calamarca, Laiel Dei, in embossed and engraved silver. He is depicted cleaning the barrel of his harquebus with a swab; dressed as a 17th century Spanish soldier, he is wearing a large feathered hat, a rich embroidered suit with a wide piped collar and shoes with a bow. South America, Bolivia, 18th century Height: 30,7 cm - Width: 20,3 cm On a wooden plate Gross weight: 799.2 g This angel is directly inspired by a series of angels kept in the church of Calamarca, a town located about sixty kilometers from La Paz in Bolivia. These anonymous paintings would be the work of José López de los Rios, long called Master of Calamarca, the author of paintings in Carabucco in 1684. Particularly picturesque with their rich costumes of the time of Van Dick, the Hierarchies and the Military Angels, to which this silver angel of a beautiful quality of execution belongs, have been the object of numerous representations by Andean and even Iberian artists.
