Rare articulated Virgin and Child in carved... - Lot 96 - Giquello
Rare articulated Virgin and Child in carved fruitwood with remains of gilding and polychromy, additions of metal and canvas elements, hollow back. Mary bends her head towards her Son whom she holds on her right hand; face with finely hemmed eyes, long straight nose, well-defined lips and small protruding chin; she was wearing a dress with a square neckline revealing the shirt; the Child with fully articulated arms and legs has the palm of his left hand pierced indicating that he was to hold the globe, his other hand sketching a gesture of blessing; sole. Northern Italy, Liguria, 16th century Total height : 90 cm (cracks, body thinned during its life of use) This is a sixteenth-century sculpture of an articulated devotional figure intended to be wigged and dressed. It can still be seen in some parish churches or diocesan museums in Liguria, such as in Pignone or San Bartolomeo al Mare. Exceptionally, the Virgin has preserved her own articulated Child. Fully clothed in costumes and wearing hair wigs, the ensemble was meant to give the illusion of life and to fascinate the faithful with the changes in position that the Mother and the Son could adopt. It was thus possible at Christmas time to transform this Virgin and Child into the Virgin of the Nativity by placing Jesus in a crib. Provenance: Private collection, Piacenza, Italy Book consulted : V. E. Genovese, Statue vestite e snodate. Un percorso, Pisa, 2011.
