École française circa 1790
State of the demolition of the Bastille in 1790 Pen and wash on paper. Under glass. On the back a handwritten inscription of the time accompanied by a phrygian cap: "This drawing shows the state of the demolition of the Bastille in 1790 and the view of the ditch where the citizen Palloy established his yard of sculpted modelles for the Departments. Under the vaults of the bottom which were walled up, he installed forges to melt medals with the lead of the roofs and rings with the chains of the captives, which he sold to the patriots to sharpen their hatred of the Kings and to fan their feelings of love for freedom." (sic) H. 24 x W. 38 cm. Exhibition: Archives Nationales, La Fayette, July 1957, n°218.
