FIGURE YINA NUKUMA, AMAKI VILLAGE, WASHKUK... - Lot 45 - Giquello
FIGURE YINA NUKUMA, AMAKI VILLAGE, WASHKUK HILLS, UPPER SEPIK, PAPUA NEW GUINEA Wood H. 110 cm Provenance : Chris Boylan (Australia) Imposing monoxyle sculpture composed of an ovoid head resting on a long neck serving as a grip. The face is deeply hollowed out, with a smiling mouth, round eyes and a pointed nose in relief. The lower part of the face is painted in red. The forehead is full, marked by abstract engravings enhanced with white. The skull tapers at the top, forming a small bird's head with a curved beak pointing backwards. A crusty ritual material covers the object. This type of figure, called Apaginok, was brought out during important yam harvesting rites. Douglas Newton suggests that these pieces represent water spirits (in Crocodile and Cassowary, NY 1971). Our example was probably used for ceremonies between 1930 and 1940.
