HÉRÉ (Emmanuel).
Collection of plans, elevations and sections, both geometrical and in perspective, of the castles, gardens and outbuildings that the King of Poland occupies in Lorraine... Sold in Paris by François, s.d. [1752]. Large folio, half calf, spine decorated (modern binding in the 18th century taste). First edition. Very beautiful architectural book entirely engraved on copper, including a title, a dedication leaf, a superb allegorical frontispiece drawn by Girardet (bust portrait of Stanislas Leszczynski crowned by Minerva in the presence of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture, with the destructive Time lying on the ground), 33 plates (simple, folding or double-page), and a descriptive text leaf (Description of the rock...). This is the first of three volumes constituting the great Recueil de Héré (1752-1753), a work composed by Emmanuel Héré (1705-1763), student of Germain Boffrand and first architect of King Stanislas of Poland in exile in Nancy. It contains plans and views of the monarch's major projects concerning the development and decoration of the castles and gardens of Lunéville, Chanteheux and La Malgrange, the church of Bonsecours, etc. Small wetness at the foot of the frontispiece. The plan of the castle of Chanteheux is trimmed short at the foot but not missing.
