HUGO (Hermann).
The Siege of the city of Breda conquered by the arms of King Philip IV. By the direction of the Infanta Isabella Cl. Eug. By the value of the marquis Amb. Spinola. Antwerp, Ex Officina Plantiniana [Balthasar Moretus], 1631. Small folio, calfskin, smooth spine decorated throughout, red title page, yellow edges (Binding circa 1800). First edition in French, translated by Philippe Chifflet, of this account of the conquest of the city of Breda, in North Brabant, by the Spaniards in 1625. The Jesuit Hermann Hugo (1588-1629), well versed in theology and history, reports that the siege resulted in more than 5,000 deaths. Beautiful title-frontispiece by Pierre-Paul Rubens engraved on copper by Corneille Galle, 13 engraved plans, of which 6 in the text and 7 on double page, plus 2 figures in the text. A nice copy, nicely bound in seeded calf around 1800. In this copy, 2 engraved plans in the text have been covered by other prints of the same kind. Armorial bookplates and dry stamps bearing the motto Sapere aude (Anglo-Saxon provenance). Some foxing on the last few leaves. Spine faded.
