INVALIDS (Royal Hotel of the). - Collection of 23 plates. S.l.n.d. [late 17th and early 18th century]. Large folio, marbled calf, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the center, ornate spine, repeated numeral (18th century binding). Collection of 23 copper-engraved plates concerning the Hôtel des Invalides: masterpiece of French classical architecture, this architectural complex was created around 1670 by Louis XIV, for the invalids of his armies, and designed by Bruand and Hardouin-Mansart. The plates in this collection, with the exception of two, are taken from the Description générale de l'Hostel Royal des Invalides by Lejeune de Boullencourt (Paris, 1683): a frontispiece depicting Louis XIV leaving for war, to whom the construction plan of the Invalides is submitted, and 20 plates depicting plans, sections, and views of the building, as well as the refectory, signed Marot and Le Pautre. The 2 other plates, bound at the end, were engraved by Scotin after Delamonce and bear the date 1711: Vue intérieure et perspective de l'église des Invalides and Plan général de la magnifique église royale des Invalides. 18th century binding with the royal arms of France. The frontispiece is cut out with a square line and reassembled. Some foxing and browning. Corners restored, spine rebound with inlay of the original decoration.
