LALANDE (Jérôme de).
Des Canaux de navigation, et spécialement du canal de Languedoc. Paris, Veuve Desaint, 1778 In-folio, blue paper boards, untrimmed (Binding of the time). First edition, decorated with 14 copper-engraved plates, 5 of which are folding. Important work on river navigation, due to the famous astronomer Jérôme de Lalande (1732-1807). The author gives details on the different canals of France, in particular the Canal du Midi whose history he traces and informs us about its construction. Chapters also concern the canals of Europe, Russia, Turkey, Asia (China and Tonkin), Africa, without forgetting America (America gave rise to the most beautiful and important idea of a canal that has ever been conceived, which is that of cutting the Isthmus of Panama, and joining the North Sea with the Pacific). Copy in waiting cardboard, untrimmed and with large margins. A few light freckles.
