MAROT (Jean).
Paris, Jean Mariette, 1727. In-folio, spotted calf, cold fillet, ornamented spine, red title, red speckled edges (period binding). This collection, known as the Grand Marot, is without doubt the major work of the great architect and engraver Jean Marot. It is of great importance for the knowledge of architecture, decoration and gardens under the reign of Louis XIV. First published around 1670, it was republished by Mariette in 1727 in 3 volumes containing more than 550 engravings. This copy includes an engraved title and 228 engraved plates in intaglio, some of them folding: various plates of churches and other religious buildings (about 55 plates including 10 for the Sorbonne church, 10 others for the Val de Grâce, and 2 for Saint-Pierre de Rome), 10 large plates for the Louvre, numerous engravings representing private mansions in Paris and its surroundings, castles, etc. There are also a few plates devoted to the temple of Balbec in Syria. Eighteenth century handwritten bookplate on the title: to Mr Husson Inspecteur des Ponts et Chaussées. Small stain on a handful of engravings, small restoration on the edge of about ten plates, some engravings a little yellowed. Binding restored.
