Odilon Redon (1840-1916)
Light. 1893. Lithograph. Subject: 274 x 390; sheet: 450 x 630 mm. Mellerio 123. Very nice proof on chine appliqué, annotated "Odilon Redon" in pencil under the subject on the right. Numerous marginal foxing. Minor tear near the upper left corner. Thread-like traces of rubbing on the surface, visible in the chine and the support at low light. Slight indentations or tiny marginal ripples, visible only at low light. All margins. "In his 'livre de raison', Redon notes that the lithograph Lumière was executed after a drawing entitled Tête pensive. Mentioned in a list of works at the date of 1881, it was thus taken again twelve years later to be transposed on the lithographic stone. [...] We also learn, on February 15, 1893, that this lithograph, printed in fifty copies by Becquet, was put on sale as soon as it appeared at the home of the musician and esoteric writer Edmond Bailly, who ran the Librairie de l'Art Indépendant, a meeting place for esoteric and symbolist circles. The publication of this work corresponds to the moment when Redon aroused the interest of these circles and enjoyed their support."" (Valérie Sueur-Hermel, in R. Rapetti, ed. in R. Rapetti, Odilon Redon Prince du Rêve, exhibition catalog, Paris, RMN, 2011, p. 257).
