HEREDIA (José-Maria de)
Les Trophées. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1893. In-12, brown morocco, jansenist, lining of havana morocco decorated with a large mosaic fleuron of red, black or pale green in the style of the Middle Ages placed in an ogive drawn by a gilt net, gold brocaded silk endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine (Marius Michel). First edition. Autograph address on the false title: to Mr. Henri Gallice, homage of the author. Attached is the autograph manuscript of an unpublished sonnet by Heredia (one page in-8). At the bottom of the page, this note from the poet's hand : This sonnet that I did not insert in Les Trophées was handwritten for Madame Agar who recited it, at the Salle Gerson, with the greatest success. Agar (1832-1891), whose real name was Marie-Léonide Charvin, was, with Rachel and Sarah Bernhardt, one of the most famous tragediennes of her time.
