Two Battles of Alexander: Arbelles and Issus Charcoal, blur and white highlights One signed lower right 86,5 x 137 cm - 100,5 x 135 cm (exposed, tears) In the catalog of the exhibition of Henri Regnault's works which took place at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts after his death, the battle of Issus was exhibited under n° 130 with the mention "done at the age of 11" and that of Arbelles under n°131 (done at the age of 12). "These studies were intended for the large paintings that he was already planning to paint one day... they were noticed by the boldness of the composition, the movement of the figures, the audacity of the short cuts, so many qualities which already denoted the breath of a true artist. A child of eleven to thirteen years old who played with such difficulties was wonderfully gifted, and one could sense that he would become a great painter" in Henri Regnault's correspondence collected and annotated by M.
