Henri REGNAULT (1843-1871)
Judith and Holofernes Oil on canvas 45,5 x 54,5 cm Provenance: Sotheby's London 23/11/2000 lot n°24; Sotheby's Paris, 18/11/2002, n°56 Study for the second consignment from Rome by Henri Regnault, kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, made between 1867 and 1869. In his correspondence, he evokes the genesis of the painting, his hesitations and reworking of the composition; for the figure of Holofernes, his servant Lagraine served as a model, and he gave his Judith the features of Dolores, a cabaret singer he had met in Spain.
