Bangwa royal statue, Cameroon Wood, beads H.... - Lot 49 - Giquello
Bangwa royal statue, Cameroon Wood, beads H. 85 cm Provenance: - Given by the Bangwa chieftaincy to Mr. Bucket in the 1930s - Picard, Audap, Solanet & associés, Paris, March 19, 1999, n° 68 This remarkable statue represents a male figure in majesty seated on a stool supported by four small caryatid figures, who holds a libatory horn, a symbol of authority, in his right hand and pressed against his chest. His left arm is resting on the thigh, the sex is clearly represented. The head offers a face with powerful features, the mouth open, the teeth visible, the nose thick, the eyes wide open, the ears wide open. The figure is wearing a cap that draws two richly decorated flat areas on the back of the skull. The whole statue, with the exception of the stool, is covered with a fabric made of a kind of sisal called mbogasi on which are sewn round glass beads of various colors: white, blue, orange, red, pink. The beading draws complex decorations of lines, rhombuses and chevrons. It is generally well preserved even if some parts have suffered from the repeated manipulations to which the statue has been subjected over time. As Louis Perrois notes about another beaded statue collected by Pierre Harter, "the beadwork is a very important element that influences the artist in the composition of the volumes" and the sculptor had to rely on the beadwork craftsman to render the details of the statue that the fabric masked, the small size of the granular beads allowing to easily follow the delicate contours of the wooden figure.
