CINEMA - DIRECTORS TRUFFAUT François (1932-1984).... - Lot 6 - Giquello
CINEMA - DIRECTORS TRUFFAUT François (1932-1984). L.D.S. to his friend director and screenwriter Alex JOFFÉ (1918-1995). St Paul de Vence, "weekend beginning July 62". 1 p. in-folio. Very beautiful and amusing letter in which Truffaut gives advice to Joffé on the outcome of his future film "Les culottes rouges". "I have read "Les culottes rouges". The frankness, between us, always de rigueur, allows me to tell you that this time it is not yet the big thing I expect from you and of which I know you are capable. It's not bad and it will make a good film, one more good film. Some of the things that are good have already been seen and one often thinks of La grande Illusion (the transvestite), Stalag 17, and a lot of La Traversée de Paris (the relationship between Fernand and Antoine). [...] I thought of a slightly bizarre ending that would make people laugh. Fendard has become a brigadier-cop. In Paris at the end of '61, all day long you can hear plastic explosions and fire engines. No one paid attention anymore, explosions became a familiar "noise" in the streets of the sixteenth arrondissement. A woman reported to the police station (let's say the wife of Mendès France) the comings and goings of a guy in front of her building. Fendard goes to the place and catches Antoine just as he is lighting a fuse on Mendes France's doormat. He jumps on him, they recognize each other. Fendard lectured him and took him to a bar to get drunk. "Come on, promise me you won't do that shit again and come and have a drink .......". [...] I've just flipped through your script again and I realize that I forgot to tell you that what's new and interesting is the theatrical rehearsal side, the Phi-Phi side, which will surely be very nice [...If you remember the end in the movie theater, it would be funny if, before Fendard and Antoine recognize each other, Fendard bragged a little and said : "I escaped five times, I stopped the fifth Panzer for two days in Montcornet etc..." in the heat of the controversy. It would be necessary that the room be dark etc. [...] A thousand greetings, my dear Alex, while waiting for you to read the scenario of Fahrenheit 451 (by the way, I am looking for a better title!!)".
