BLACAS d'Aulps Pierre-Louis duc de (1771-1839). Ministre et favori de Louis XVIII.
L.A.S. (partly autograph) to baron ***. Kirchberg, July 14, 1838. 2 pp. ¼ bi folio in-4. Nice occasional letter from the former favorite, mentioning the coronation of Queen Victoria, the departure of the Duchess of Berry (who had given birth to a daughter, Isabella, in March 1838), the claims of the Orléans... "Mr. Baron, I have the honor of sending you a letter for Mr. le Comte de Merey [...]. The King [Louis XIX Duke of Angouleme] would like you to be so kind as to provide him with an English newspaper in which he could find all the promotions that took place on the occasion of the coronation of Queen Victoria. We have seen in the French papers the number of generals, admirals, etc., but their names are not found there [...]. The mother of M. le Duc de Bordeaux arrived here yesterday at 4 o'clock. It is supposed that she will leave on the 24th or 25th at the latest. She intends to take the road to Krems to return to Styria [...]. And he adds in his own hand: The last news from France are about the war [...] It is claimed that Mr. Louis Philippe would only find this way to prolong his existence which becomes more precarious every day. I doubt that war can popularize him, and he would gamble his throne with a cross or a coin [...] We will soon know what we are dealing with, and the trip of the Emperor of Russia to Bohemia may become more interesting than we thought. Mad. de Blacas sends you a thousand compliments and asks you not to forget the young counts of Peyroux [...]."
