Tapestry with the Parreno-Calderon family... - Lot 2 - Giquello
Tapestry with the Parreno-Calderon family coat of arms (Spain) Bruges tapestry 16th century, circa 1550 City mark and workshop mark. H. 2.88 x W. 3.23 m H. 9ft 6 x W. 10ft8 Marks on the tapestry: The tapestry features two types of markings: At the bottom of the right lateral border, a remnant of a workshop mark, probably that of Aernout van Loo, cf. Bruges et la tapisserie - catalog d' Exposition:, 1987 - p. 225. At the bottom of the left lateral border, the mark of the city of Bruges. Coat of arms : Set against the tapestry's red background are "large coats of arms", surmounted by a crest and surrounded by scrolls of acanthus leaves. According to Delmarcel 1999, this is the coat of arms of the Spanish Parreno-Calderon family (calderon is Spanish for cauldron). This was probably a high-ranking military family, judging by the trophies in the borders. Related tapestry: This tapestry is identical to the one presented in Delmarcel 1999 (op. cit.) p. 186. However, there is a difference in size (H. 2.59 x W. 2.86 m) and presentation. In the tapestry reproduced in Guy Delmarcel's book, the putto on the top of the crest enters the upper border and looks to the right, while the acanthus scrolls are less developed than in the present tapestry, in which the putto remains within the central composition and looks to the left. In fact, the entire composition of the two tapestries is reversed. Materials and condition: Woven in wool and silk (wool warp - 6 warp threads per cm, wool and silk weft) - Beautiful bright colors - Some old restorations, maintenance restorations - Wear in the silk of the central armorial medallion. Provenance : - Private collection, former Georges Chevalier collection Bibliographical references : - Guy Delmarcel (1999) - Flemish Tapestry from the 15th to the 18th century
