Greenery with birds - Lot 22
Greenery with birds French tapestry, Paris or Beauvais Second half of the 17th century H. 2.58 x W. 3.20 m H. 8ft 6 x W. 10ft 6 For the Paris attribution: the frame-like border is the same border that appears on the tapestries of L'Histoire de Constantin after Rubens in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, which were woven in the Paris workshops before the creation of the Manufacture Royale des Gobelins. It's interesting to note that the frame-like border is more typical of the 18th century, but it was already found, albeit very rarely, in the second half of the 17th century. For attribution to the Manufacture Royale de Beauvais: compare with the Detroit Institute of Art tapestries, with the arms of Vincent Hotman and Marguerite Colbert, reproduced in the 1996 Exhibition catalog, under number 14 and figure 13; the tonality and birds are the same. Materials and condition: Woven in wool and silk (warp in wool, weft in wool and silk), the tapestry retains lovely, subtle colors. Reduced in height and width. Provenance : - Private collection, former Georges Chevalier collection. Bibliographical references : - N. Birioukova, 1974, Les Tapisseries françaises de la fin du XVe XVe au XXe siècle dans les Collections de l'Ermitage (tapisseries n° 12 à n° 16). - Tracey Albany, Alan Phipps Darr, 1996, Woven splendor, Five Centuries of European tapestry in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
