Melancholy - Lot 28
Melancholy French tapestry panel, 18th century The panel is signed Morel and dated 1751, probably Manufacture Royale des Gobelins In a beautiful antique frame, France Louis XIV period (minor accidents) With frame H. 0.70 x W. 0.60 m H. 2ft 3 ½ x W. 1ft 11 ½ Without frame H. 0,59 x L. 0,48 m H. 1ft 11 ½ x W. 1ft 7 After the beautiful painting by Domenico Fetti (c. 1589-1623): La Mélancolie (circa 1623) housed in the Musée du Louvre. This vanitas was part of Louis XIV's collection. It is most likely a masterpiece woven after the above-mentioned painting. In this small panel, we encounter all the difficulties that a future master weaver would have had to face: very fine weaving, hatching, beating, rendering flesh, drapery, bone, a landscape in the distance, metal wire clawing in the signature, etc. Material and condition: The tapestry is finely woven in wool, silk and precious metal threads: wool warp (10 warp threads per cm) wool, silk and metal thread weft. Good condition, colors well preserved Exhibition: - Dieu, ses prophètes et ses saints, Galerie Chevalier, June 2001 - reproduced as catalog no. 20, by Nicole de Pazzis-Chevalier. Provenance : - Former Michel Rullier collection We would like to thank Capucine Montanari-Fleury for her expert assessment of the frame.
