The Dromedary - Lot 32
The Dromedary H. 2.75 x W. 4.05 m H. 9ft x W. 13ft 4 Description: The composition of the present tapestry consists of two open arcades, within which a red "heraldic pavilion" edged with gold braid unfolds. The arcades frame a portico, with Virginia creeper running across the top. The three architectural elements each contain a different scene: in the center, a large bouquet of flowers, a bunting and acrobatic children; on the left, an acrobat on a tightrope, musicians (violinist and tambourine player) and parrots. On the right, the animal that gives the tapestry its title: The Dromedary enters the terrace, held back by his red-clad guardian. The frame-like border features large acanthus leaves on a blue background. Materials and condition: Woven in wool and silk (wool warp - 7 warp threads per cm - wool and silk weft) Good condition - colors are still vivid. The border was partly restored in the 19th century. Provenance : - French private collection - Sale in Versailles, 23.06.1976 - Château de Plancoulaine (Vienne department)
