Spanish loop-stitch rug, probably knotted in Alpujarra, prov - Lot 56
Spanish loop-stitch rug, probably knotted in Alpujarra, province of Granada
On a red background, stylized vine scrolls stand out; the first, in black, white and gray, serves as a border and surrounds another, smaller scroll in gray and white.
In the center, a rectangle is adorned with four vases from which stylized plants spring.
Each vase is surrounded by two small dogs. Does this decoration symbolize fertility and fidelity?
The color scheme is very harmonious.
The carpet is fringed on all four sides; according to Ian Bennett (op. cit.), this means that the carpet was intended as a bed cover (hence perhaps the symbols mentioned above).
