Carpet from the Karabagh region in the South Caucasus, in th - Lot 71
Carpet from the Karabagh region in the South Caucasus, in the town of Shusha. The raspberry-red background is adorned with a highly stylized, repetitive herati pattern that covers the entire field in ivory, yellow and royal blue tones. The background is framed by a large royal blue border with a garland of flowers, set between two thin yellow counter-borders. This carpet is a fine example of a carpet knotted in the town of Shusha in the Karabagh region, a fortified town built by a Khan in the late 18th century. The date inscribed "1811" is incorrect, as it is combined with a Russian inscription. However, the Russians didn't settle in Shusha until the late 19th century. The date 1877 seems more likely. This rug must have been intended for a Russian customer who placed an order for it, and the weaver probably misinterpreted the cardboard. Wool carpet on wool warp and weft Last third of the 19th century 5.85 x 2.53 m - 19ft2 x 8ft4 Good condition, bright colors, some wear
