MICHEL BOULANGER COLLECTION Bembé head Democratic Republic of Congo Wood H: 20 cm Provenance Galerie Olivier Castellano, Paris Michel Boulanger Collection Wooden Janus head depicting Kalunga, the spirit of the waters. The faces on either side are minimalist: two large concave areas represent the orbits, marked by tubular pupils in relief. A hollow mouth appears at the junction. The surface is adorned with asymmetrical polychromy.
